About
Restoring healthy, regenerative relationships between people and place in Mākena.
The Aloha Mākena Foundation works to restore healthy, regenerative relationships between the people and the ʻāina of Mākena.
Mākena holds a cultural landscape of extraordinary depth — burial sites, trails, fishing grounds, and the moʻolelo that hold them together — alongside dune, shoreline, and reef ecosystems under steady pressure. Caring for them takes sustained, local work.
We support that work: restoring native ecosystems, documenting and protecting cultural sites, recording kūpuna knowledge, and bringing students and community members onto the ʻāina to learn firsthand.
Aloha Mākena Foundation is a Hawaiʻi nonprofit corporation, founded in 2019 and recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

The Aloha Mākena Foundation was established in 2019 as a Hawaiʻi nonprofit corporation to advance the stewardship of Mākena's cultural and natural resources.
The Foundation was formed to realize that effective stewardship of this place requires both professional capability and the knowledge held by the families who have lived here across generations, and that an organization built on one without the other will not succeed.
We work in partnership with Mākena Beach and Golf Club, but we are an independent non-profit organization.
Our programs are directed by the lineal and cultural descendants of Mākena. Determinations regarding cultural sites, documentation, and the handling of traditional knowledge rest with the families whose kūpuna are here.

Our Story
Our Vision

We envision a healthy and thriving Mākena, where descendants continue to reside and carry out the practices passed on from their kūpuna.
